Unit 22.1 - Research
RED DWARF
Red Dwarf is a British Science Fiction sitcom which ran for 8 series between 1988 - 1999. It features an ongoing story of Dave Lister (the last human) making his way back to earth after being in suspended animation for 3 million years. At the beginning of the series the show sets up the back story by showing how Lister ended up in suspended animation (for keeping an unregistered cat) and explains how Lister became the last human by Holly (the ships computer) telling him it was a radiation leak. The show then introduces Rimmer (a hologram of Lister's old flat mate) and the 'Cat' (a descendant of Lister's cat). In later series the show also introduces Kryten a robot the crew find which becomes their house maid. For most of the series the main characters remain the same (although during the last 2 the line up changes slightly) and the main recurring story (to get back to earth) also remains the same. This allows for an easy to follow show as most episodes are self contained and thus the viewer does not need to be familiar with other episodes (with the exception of knowing what the characters are).
Notes:
The whole series is linear.
The genre is Sci-Fi, I know this because the story takes place in the future and Centres around characters such as holograms and robots. Often the show deals with aliens or parallel universes as a plot device.
The sounds effects also indicate it is a Sci-Fi as background noises often include flying sounds; such as wind passing the ship.
Episodes often contain Aliens or fictional scientific devices or planets.
Another genre it is is sitcom this is obvious through its use of adult humor, laughter track and slapstick comedy. Examples; Kryten taking off Listers underwear because they are getting tighter.
One of its episodes 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse won an International Emmy Award.
An on going joke in the series is Lister's sex drive as he is often seen playing virtual games and having relationships with female characters in the game. Also whenever he is seen with a female character he is often hitting on them.
